UAE: Tightening Control over Dismissing Pregnant Women from Work

The UAE Labour Law protects working women by offering them rights and privileges to distinguish them from men. The Labour Law indicates that an employer should not dismiss women in their postpartum period, provided that their absence does not exceed 45 days prior to and after childbirth.

Trying to escape the law, some institutions dismiss pregnant women in many ways in order to get rid of the costs of pregnancy, childbirth leave, and periods of breastfeeding after childbirth.

In order to face this prejudice against pregnant women, the government introduced a new bill that limits the employer’s authority. The bill prohibits discrimination and prevents the employer from dismissing or warning women to leave because of her pregnancy and her health.
