The National Federation of the Agricultural Sector, part of the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT), has launched a national campaign to denounce the poor conditions of workers in the agricultural sector in Morocco. As part of this campaign, the Federation has published a report on all the suffering faced by workers in this vital sector.
The report revealed that workers and pensioners in the agricultural sector live below the poverty line because of inadequate wages and pensions and the lack of any social security coverage.
The study added that despite the agreement signed between the government and employers in 2011, the agreement of payment according to the number of working hours is still not applied in the sector, which also fails to comply with the minimum wage applied in the sector of industry; the minimum wage in the agricultural sector is less than 35% of the minimum wage in the industrial sector.
The Federation has also denounced arbitrary dismissals by employers on the pretext of COVID-19. The organisation explained that the phenomenon of agricultural labour brokering has become almost similar to human trafficking.
The union concluded its report by calling for the introduction of the same minimum wage as that applied in the industrial sector, ending violations against the rights of agricultural workers, respect for trade union freedoms, and the application of social protection in the sector.
