Tunisia: A strike in Tunisair

On Friday, February 19, 2021, the Workers’ union of Tunisair suspended all services at Tunisia’s airports in preparation for an open strike as a response to the major financial difficulties the company has been facing for years. As a result of this strike, the loading and unloading operations of other companies’ aircraft stopped.

The strike was decided following the decision to hold Tunisiar’s accounts by TAV, which operates the airport of Enfidha, to recover the Tunisair debt.

Following a meeting organized by the Minister of Transport between representatives from Tunisair, the Civil Aviation Authority and the airports, and the management of the TAV, the decision to hold the accounts of the company has been lifted.

Tunisair, already going through a crisis for many years, has been deeply impacted by Covid-19. The overstaffing and the payroll of the company are considered to be the two main reasons of the crisis.

The successive administrations of the company’s attempt at reducing the number of its staff to reduce wages have been met with trade union rejection.
