Lebanon: The Numbers of Workers who Lost their Jobs due to COVID-19 is Increasing

The number of people affected by COVID-19 is increasing. Many people lost their jobs or some of their dues due to the difficult situation in the light of the pandemic.

The parties to whom the affected workers complained were the Ministry of Labour, the General Workers’ Union, the Lebanese Observatory for Workers and Employees Rights, and the National Federation of Trade Unions and Employees.

What made things worse was the fact that some companies and businessmen justified reducing the workers’ wages or working hours despite official government instructions to avoid this by COVID-19.

A source from the Ministry of Labour stated that individual workers' complaints amounted to 1,953 complaints, and that collective complaints amounted to 129 complaints between October 2019 and November 2020.

In addition, a trade union source stated that the National Federation of Workers and Employees Syndicates has been receiving about ten complaints per day since 2019. These complaints revolve around the reduction of workers’ wages, even though they work full-time, even during the lockdown and quarantine period.
