Jordan: Negotiations on the Labour Law Bill Continue

The labour law bill in Jordan is being criticized, especially by those concerned with labour and human rights affairs. In this regard, there were numerous and repeated calls for an entire revision of the project.

Among the latest criticisms was the statement made by the Executive Director of the Tamkeen Centre for Legal Aid and Human Rights in Jordan. She opposed the bill and asked for the revision of the whole project. She argued that the bill went from the government directly to the House of Representatives without being the subject of a national dialogue, first, with all concerned parties, especially trade unions and civil society organizations.

The director argued that, for example, describing domestic workers who leave their work as ‘escapees’ is unjust unless the work place is a ‘prison’ and that any worker has the right to leave their job if they are unsatisfied or are not getting paid.
