The number of workers affected by the pandemic in Tunisia has reached more than 25,600 people who lost their jobs during the first nine months of 2020. This came in the Minister of Social Affairs’ statement to the Parliament on bills, including the enactment of exceptional provisions the suspension of others.
The minister explained that the causes of job loss are dismissals, technical unemployment, and closing down establishments. He added that 11,193 of them included a reduction in working hours, and thus a reduction in their wages.
The minister added that the number of dismissed workers during the first nine months of 2019 reached 6,530 workers, and that this number increased in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The informal sector witnessed a loss of thousands of workers. The measures taken to limit the spread of the virus were reflected mainly on workers of the informal sector, who represent about 35%of the total workforce in Tunisia.
The minister, however, refuted the false information that 165,000 people lost their job.
