Jordan: Parliamentary Accountability on the Smuggling of Domestic Workers

The Minister of Labour and Social Development has been subject to a parliamentary accountability about the issues of domestic workers and their smuggling. One of the MPs mentioned that there are gangs in many neighbourhoods who smuggle workers for illegal purposes.

In this regard, the Minister of Labour and Social Development revealed that about 3,000 domestic workers have escaped between 2015 and 2020, while the status of 550 domestic workers has been fixed by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.

The minister denounced employing domestic workers through unofficial recruitment agencies. He, also, called for the introduction of voluntary insurance that spares home owners to bear the costs of deporting house workers when necessary.
