Saudi Arabia: Towards a Reduction of Migrant Workers

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development of Saudi Arabia established a program entitled the “Work Examination Program” that aims to encourage Saudi workforce and reduce the number of migrant workers.

This program, which will be gradually implemented, will require that migrant workers pass an initial professional test in their countries to obtain entry visas to Saudi Arabia, and another test for migrant workers currently residing in the Kingdom.

The program has been implemented on March 8th so that companies can start applying it. This procedure will become compulsory starting from July 2021. This program targets more than a thousand professions according to the Saudi Occupational Classification.

Saudi Arabia, which is the largest economy in the Arab world, hosts about 12 million immigrants, of whom more than nine million are involved in the labour market, with a majority in domestic and construction work.
