The Sixth General Conference of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) held in late January 2021 in Jericho, in the presence of trade union representatives of the most important Palestinian economic sector, many Palestinian ministers, and international and Arab trade union officials, came to an end.
The Secretary-General of the Union, Mr. Shaher Saad, presented a report in which he reviewed the outcome of the activities carried out by the Union during the period from July 30, 2016 to January 27, 2021. He mentioned the crisis the Palestinian economy has been facing as well as the difficulties Palestinian workers have been facing in the light of the sanitary crisis, job losses, and the violations and crimes Palestinian workers in the occupied territories have been subject to.
In this regard, he claimed that, by the end of 2020, about 336,300 workers, including 211,300 in the Gaza Strip and 125,000 in the West Bank, lost their jobs during the pandemic crisis. Saad mentioned that the Palestinian economy lost nearly $ 3 billion because of COVID-19.
The Secretary General of the Palestine Workers Union concluded the conference by announcing launching a national campaign to urge the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Law, to implement sustainable development goals, and to create a safe and a risk-free work environment.
