Study: The Impacts of COVID-19 on Working Women

A study conducted by North-western University revealed that the impact of the economic recession was more on men than on women, given that the recession affects the sectors dominated by men such as construction and manufacturing.

On the other hand, the study showed that the economic recession caused by the pandemic was the cause of the high unemployment rates among women at unprecedented levels, as the service and tourism sectors, in which women constitute a large proportion of workers, have been severely affected by the measures of lockdown and quarantine.

In addition, a large number of them had to leave their job due to the closure of nurseries and schools and the inability to take care of their children by relatives for fear of infection.

The study predicts that the damages may continue for a long time, and it called on employers to make more efforts to preserve female competencies.

On the other hand, officials in UN organizations and leaders active in the field of human rights in several regions of the world stated that the pandemic has increased the income gap between the sexes, as job losses, especially those with low wages, were higher among women. They explained that quarantine measures increased gender-based violence, especially domestic violence.
