Saudi Arabia is to abolish the foreign worker sponsorship system, also known as ‘Kafala’, and replace it with an alternative to improve contractual relationship as announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD).
The reforms will give expatriate workers freedom to secure exit and re-entry visas and other services taking into consideration the rights of both parties of the contract. The reforms are now scheduled to come into effect on 14 March 2021.
This initiative will contribute to improving the work environment and protecting workers' wages through labour courts.
