Spain: Fire in a Migrant Workers’ Camp

A fire broke out on Saturday night, February 13th, at a camp for migrant workers in the Negar region of southern Spain. A media site specializing in migrant issues stated that the fire destroyed major parts of this camp, which is inhabited by about 1,200 Moroccan migrant workers and migrant workers from sub-Saharan Africa.

The same source mentioned that the fire destroyed dozens of huts with plastic roofs, leaving about 200 migrant workers without shelter, whose wages in the agricultural sector do not enable them to have decent housing since the monthly wage per worker does not exceed 30 euros.

The workers live in very poor conditions that were worsened by COVID-19.

The same source mentioned that twenty-seven non-governmental organizations working on the defence of migrants made an appeal last April to regularize the conditions of these workers who suffering from the poor living conditions as a result of COVID-19.
