The Economic, Social, and Environmental Council of Morocco declared that work accidents cause the death of about 2000 workers every year.
Based on the statistics of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Council noted that the number of deaths in work accidents and occupational diseases in Morocco is the highest in North Africa and the Middle East.
The Council urges improving the health and safety system at work in order to avoid the negative repercussions of these accidents on workers and their families on the one hand, and on the companies and their competitiveness on the other.
According to ILO, Morocco sought to improve the health and safety system at work by establishing the National Institute for Occupational Life Conditions and preparing a national policy for health and safety at work, but still has shortcomings in its system: for example, in addition to the shortage of doctors, companies that apply protection and safety measures at work do not exceed 17%.
The council noted the lack of awareness of health and safety at work, a lack of respect for its standards, especially in informal sector enterprises, and poor social coverage, which covers only 25% of the private sector's wage earners. Therefore, the Council called for implemeting the compulsory insurance for occupational diseases and work accidents.
