In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, the Algerian government decided to close the air, land, and sea spaces and to reduce requests for renewal of foreign workers' licences in the country which, among other things, was the austerity policies the government issued to stop major projects.
Statistics from the Algerian Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security indicate that requests for renewal of licenses for foreign workers have decreased by 55% compared to last year.
It should be noted that, in the last two decades, Algeria has been receiving thousands of foreign workers after it launched many projects in housing, public works and energy. However, in addition to approving an increase in the fees imposed for renewing work permits for foreign workers, the decision was taken for two more reasons: the closure of borders and the tightening policy of the Central Bank of Algeria on foreign currency transfers outside the country. In addition to approving an increase in the fees imposed for renewing work permits for foreign workers.
The government will have to review the projects granted to foreign institutions, which will negatively affect major activities and delay the delivery of projects due to a shortage of locally qualified manpower.
