Egypt: Protestors Ending their Sit-in after the Police Promises to Release Detained Workers

The Centre for Trade Union & Workers' Services (CTUWS) declared that large protests took place in Delta fertilizers factory in Talkha as a way to denounce arresting workers after their agreement to end the sit-in in exchange for releasing the previously arrested workers as promised by the police.

The workers agreed to end their sit-in two days ago after agreeing to release their colleagues. However, contrary to their promise, the police arrested one of the worker’s son and brother to oblige him to hand himself to the authorities.

According to the workers, 200 people are in the wanted list because of their participation in the strike (which has been lasting one month and a half) to improve the company and restore its working activities.

The workers, also, claimed that after many negotiations between the union and the police, they ended their sit-in to release the detained workers and the members of the trade union. The company, as well, refused all their demands.

Workers of the Talkha Fertilizer Company started their strike December 3, 2020 against the decision of selling the company’s lands for a real estate project at the expense of their conditions. The government was totally silent towards the decision of relocating the Talkha Fertilizer Company to Suez.
