Egypt: 18 people accused of human trafficking face 3 to 10 years of prison

The Cairo Criminal Court ordered punishing 12 accused with strict imprisonment for 3 years and a fine of 200 thousand Egyptian pounds, 5 accused with strict imprisonment for 5 years and a fine of 200 thousand Egyptian pounds, and one accused with 10 years of strict imprisonment for human trafficking and smuggling immigrants to Qasr El Nil.

The court declares that “the accused took advantage of the victims’ vulnerability who are searching for better job opportunities and provided them with fake visas. The public prosecution provided clues found to the court to which the accused confessed.”

Investigations showed that the accused founded an organized criminal group to smuggle immigrants; the first accused forges documents; the second takes appointments with embassies abroad for immigrants; the third one functions as a mediator of the criminal groups, attracts people who wish to immigrate, and gives them the fake documents to get their visas in return for a huge amount of money that can reach up to 100,000 Egyptian pound per person.
