The Jordanian Prime Minister issued Regulation No. 18 under the Defence Order No. 6 to regulate the monthly wages of workers in the sectors and activities most affected by Covid-19 as well as the informal sector.
The Minister of Labour and the Minister of State for Investment Affairs declared that, according to the Prime Minister’s statement, the monthly wages of the workers benefiting from the “Estidama” program (stipulated in the Defence Order No. 24 of 2020 and the reports promulgated thereunder to it for the period extending from December of 2020 to May of 2021) will be 75% of the monthly wage in the sectors and activities impacted the most by the pandemic that will include senior management wages. In the informal sector, the wages will be reduced to 50%.
Al Qatamin confirmed the validity of the provisions of Paragraph 1 of Clause “First” of Regulation No. 8 of 2020 concerning the workers’ wages of the most impacted sectors. He stated that “the employer may reduce the monthly wage of workers who perform their work, be it in the workplace or remotely, by a percentage not exceeding 20%, provided that the reduction is agreed upon by the worker without pressure, or coercion. The reduction should include senior management wages and should not drop under the minimum wage.”
The minister said that there will be no reduction in the wages of workers in the sectors that were not impacted by the pandemic and the formal sector.
