The general federation of Tourism, Commerce, and traditional Industries of the Tunisian General labour Union denounces firing workers due to economic reasons particularly in the light of the privileges given to the Tourism sector to keep workers and protect their salaries.
In a meeting organized by the federation on December 26, 2020, the federation insisted that the workers’ situation should be fixed including issues like wages payment, salary bonus, yearly vacations, and the social welfare contributions of the National Security Fund in 2020. The federation asks that the government should interfere to fix the workers’ situation.
The federation points to the privileges employers of the sector have. It implicitly points to its suspicion of corruption including the mismanagement of the funds they received and various breaches including firing workers. The federation invites to opening a case concerning these suspicions.
The federation demands that workers should receive their salary and the exceptional aid of 200 dinar offered by the ministry of social affairs starting from January 2021.
The federation’s and Labour Union’s reports both show the tourism sector had the highest rates of unemployment during the pandemic. The tourism sector has been impacted the most by Covid-19.
The General Secretary of the Labor Union, in an interview with the Tunis Africa Press, said that the Union is having intense negotiations with the Professional Association of Banks to apply the discussed measures. It pointed that many employers may have found the Covid-19 situation a pretext to fire workers.
