The General Union of Algerian Workers defies the government and starts a 7 days strike

The national Syndicate of the Trade sector staff of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) declared renewing a 4 days strike from the 10th to 13th of January after having a similar strike the 3rd and 4th of the same month.

The UGTA allowed its national syndicate to renew the strike as a reaction to the minister of commerce’s decision of filing a case to put an end to the strike that had a 78% rate of participation.

The national syndicate, in a statement, expressed its readiness to have an open strike in case the minister did not comply to the demands which consist in the automatic promotion of 1,900 worker who had more than 10 years’ work experience. They, also, denounced preventing control agents and officials from the Covid-19 compensation. The statement took a strict position against attempts to review the basic law of the trade sector.

The media and observers of public affairs has been following the crisis between the UGTA and the Ministry of Commerce and noticed the union’s desire to cooperate with other social participants based on independence and the protection of the workers’ economic and social interests.

They are expecting the crisis between the union and the government to get worse, particularly, concerning revising issues like the law of retirement and heavy physical labour.

To be continued.
