According to Shaher Saad, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Workers Trade Union Confederation, Shaher Saad, death toll among Palestinian workers inside the Green Line territories during the year 2020 amounted to 47 deaths, while injuries exceeded the 7000 mark, as a result of negligence by Israeli employers and the lack of means of protection for workers.
Saad added that in addition to the absence of supervision in workshops, there is a high rate of accidents’ occurrence during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Saad also pointed out in other statements made to the official (Voice of Palestine) radio, this Monday, 30% of Palestinian workers work without a permit, which makes it difficult to follow up their rights in Israeli courts, while the number of workers is estimated to be between 70 and 80 thousand workers.
Saad noted that the workers incurred huge material losses as a result of being unemployed for two months and 40 days, estimated at more than one and a half billion Shekels.
With regard to the Palestinian labor market, Saad pointed out that the number of deaths among workers reached 25 as a result of employers’ failure to adhere to the health and professional standards necessary to protect them.
Saad also added that the work of more than 135.000 workers has been terminated, forcing them to move to work within the Green Line terretories, especially construction workers, in light of the failure of the private sector to systematically invest in labor in a way that supports national products and raises the percentage of employment in the Palestinian market.
