Speakers at the regional seminar entitled 'Regional Action against Trafficking in Human Beings in the Southern Mediterranean' stressed the importance of cooperation between the States of the region to facilitate the exchange of information between all parties concerned. Several representatives of the authorities in charge of the fight against trafficking from Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon and Jordan and civil society took part in this seminar.
In this context, the president of the National Authority against Trafficking in Persons (INLTP) in Tunisia, Raoudha Laabidi, called for the creation of a regional cooperation platform to train professionals in the fight against human trafficking. Ms. Laabidi proposed to create a regional training center to train relevant actors in Tunisia.
Participants called for the establishment of a common regional strategy to fight criminal networks and the development of mechanisms to help victims of human trafficking in all southern Mediterranean countries. They also called for the creation of a South Mediterranean anti-trafficking platform.
Speakers stressed the importance of information exchange; an exchange that must be based on tools that take into consideration the specificity of each country. In this context, they explained that these tools must be consistent with international legal standards and especially with the Council of Europe Convention, which represents an important reference in the fight against human trafficking.
The participants also stressed the importance of the role of civil society in the accompaniment of victims and in the monitoring of policies carried out by the countries of the South such as the 'Help' program. They also evoked the collaboration between the legal authorities between the countries of the South in the fight against human trafficking by calling for the elaboration of a common fight strategy and the construction of a common legal space between the countries concerned.
