Bahrain's Minister of Health, Faeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, issued a new decision regarding the housing conditions of workers. This new ministerial decision stipulates that the number of workers per room must not exceed eight people. Workers must also have a dining room and a bathroom (one room for three people) and may not raise animals or birds in these accommodations.
The ministry also specified that the area allocated to each worker must be no less than four square metres of the dwelling's empty space and that floors and walls must be constructed of material that is easy to clean. The housing must also be well-lit and well-ventilated with well-made doors and windows.
The new decision also obliges employers to provide the following equipment in the dwellings; air conditioners, drinking water dispensers, garbage cans, fire extinguishers (validated by the Civil Defense Administration) and the necessary tools for waste treatment and sanitation. Employers must also provide first-aid kits, in proportion to the number of workers housed, and a space dedicated to laundry.
Employers must inform the Ministry of Labor of the address, surface area, number of workers housed and their nationality for each dwelling within 15 days of receiving residents. The Ministry will in turn forward this information to the competent authorities.
