Sudan: release of 18 girls from the grip of a human trafficking network

The Sudanese news agency reported that the Directorate of Organized Crime Control, under the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, has succeeded in dismantling a criminal network of three human trafficking traffickers. This dismantling was achieved after a raid on a house in Khartoum that resulted in the release of 18 girls of different foreign nationalities.

The head of the directorate for the fight against organized crime, Yasser Mudawi, said that the directorate has received information about a human trafficking network operating in the governorate of Khartoum.

The Sudanese news agency revealed that the main accused was collecting victims to settle them in Sudan before organizing their departure abroad by collaborating with a trafficking network operating in Addis Ababa and composed of five individuals.

It should be noted that Sudan is waging a great struggle against this scourge which has greatly increased in recent years. This traffic is mainly carried out by organized mafias operating on the eastern borders with Ethiopia and Eritrea. Their activities extend to the northwest border with Libya.

Sudan is considered a crossing point for irregular migrants who are mostly from the countries in the Horn of Africa. Once in Sudan, these migrants are transferred to other countries, such as Israel or European countries, via Libya. However, no official figures on the number of irregular migrants and smugglers are available yet. The government explained the lack of data as a result of its lack of capacity to deal with traffickers and smugglers.
