Salah Soum, president of the National Federation of Mechanics, Electronics and Minerals, part of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), called on the Ministry of Industry to move quickly to develop a clear plan to save national companies in the mechanical, electrical, mineral and electronics sectors facing a financial crisis. A financial crisis that has led to the dismissal of ENIEM workers, while 55,000 workers at the National Industrial Vehicle Company (SNVI) and Sonelgaz face an uncertain future.
The trade union leader indicated that his organization is closely following the situation of ENIEM and that it supports the demands of the dismissed workers. He explained in this context that "at a time when Algeria needs more than ever social peace, thousands of workers are put on layoff without any consultation with the unions concerned, which represents a serious violation of collective agreements and national laws in force.
Salah Soum stressed that the National Federation of Mechanics, Electronics and Minerals defends national production and the preservation of national enterprises, including ENIEM, which must be protected by the supervisory ministry. He added that the organization of the industrial sector must be revised through a new strategy preserving national enterprises and workers' rights.
He also recalled that these sectors employ no less than 55,000 workers, which requires finding solutions for national companies that also preserve national stability in order to defeat the plots that threaten the country.
