Saudi Arabia: launch of a new service platform for foreign workers

For the first time in its history, Saudi Arabia has announced that foreign workers will now be able to leave the country without the authorization of their kafil. To do so, the country has launched an initiative to improve the terms of the contract and ease restrictions on foreign workers. Thanks to this initiative, at the end of their contract, workers will be able to inform their employer of their departure from the kingdom electronically without needing their approval. If the worker chooses to leave Saudi Arabia before the end of his or her contract, the consequences of termination will be borne by the worker.

In a statement, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development announced that as of March 14, 2021, the new plan will allow the foreign worker to leave the Kingdom or to continue to work there freely, as soon as his contract ends, without needing his employer's approval. This initiative will contribute to accentuate the movement of the labor market.

These new services will be accessible via two platforms (Abashar and Bawir) under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. However, a media source said that these new measures do not apply to domestic workers who are about 3.7 million in Saudi Arabia.

In this context, the Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Social Development indicated that the motions devoted to this category of workers have not yet been discussed.
