Jordan: CSOs call for the extension of social security to all classes of society

Jordanian civil society organizations called for the implementation of the content of the royal speech delivered before the Council of State at its 19th ordinary session. During this speech, King Abdullah II had called for giving priority to the health and safety of all citizens while continuing to protect the national economy. The sovereign had explained that to do this, Jordan needs to put in place programs and work plans through effective coordination with the private sector.

work, CSOs presented a strategy of proposed measures to strengthen decent work that emphasizes the importance of integrating part-time workers into the social security system. To this end, the Ministry of Labor and the Social Security Corporation must submit proposals to the Ministerial Council, which in turn must approve them by the end of the current year. Once approved, the application of these new measures must be mandatory for all organizations, companies, and governmental and non-governmental bodies.

The strategy also called for an awareness campaign on the harmful effects of child labor and a national census to obtain real figures on this scourge. It also called for the revision of social protection schemes in order to extend them to all classes of society, including women victims of poverty, violence and discrimination.
