Tunisia: agricultural workers paid at 10 dinars a day

The association Women for Development has published a new study entitled 'Female agricultural workers in Sidi Bouzid and Kasserine: a practical approach to the forms of exploitation and the reality of violations'. Through this study, the association recommended the establishment of a national program to combat the economic exploitation of women workers in the agricultural sector.

Presented during the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women campaign, the study called for the official recognition of the profession of agricultural worker in order to regulate the working relationship between employee and employer and to involve employment offices in the recruitment process.

Based on a survey of 87 female agricultural workers, the study explained that field inspections must be intensified and that the memorandums of understanding concerning the transportation of these workers must be revised so that the State assumes its responsibility in this crucial issue and this after consultation with professionals in the sector.

The association cited testimonies of these workers, of all ages, who work in the rural areas of Sidi Bouzid and Kasserine to provide for their families. These women revealed that they work from dawn to sunset for a salary that does not exceed 10 dinars per day.

Women for Development explained that the agricultural sector relies mainly on women in its activities which continue to be considered as domestic activities. The study stressed that the State and its institutions are completely resigned to this sector where laws and agreements remain unimplemented while the feasibility of programs and measures proposed so far is far from reality.
