The Office of the High Commissioner for Planning (HCP) presented the results of its national survey on international migration 2018-2019. According to this study, only 2.9% of current Moroccan migrants have carried out investment projects in Morocco, 3.4% among men and 1.8% among women.
The results of this study, which is part of the MEDSTAT project, also showed that the investment sectors in Morocco are first real estate, then agriculture, construction, trade and services.
The overwhelming majority of current migrants (97.1 percent) do not invest in Morocco, the same source points out, noting that the reasons for noninvestment are mainly related to insufficient capital, complicated administrative procedures, and weak financial support and tax incentives. According to the same source, the percentage of migrants who send money to Morocco varies by age and host country.
Regarding average amounts sent, they are higher for young people, those with higher levels of education, current migrants from North America and former European immigration countries, the survey reported, noting that this is "certainly related to higher income levels. Recipients of remittances are parents first, followed by spouses and children. Nearly nine-tenths of the transfers received are used for the regular expenses of the Moroccan household.
