Following recent statements by the Minister of Labour regarding the coming into force of the increase in the minimum wage early next year, several people called for the postponement of the increase in question during a meeting between representatives of the business sector and the Prime Minister.
For his part, the President of the General Federation of Trade Unions, Mazen Maaitah, said that from the moment the wage increase was approved, its entry into force becomes systematic. Affirming that he was aware of the difficulties faced by all sectors as a result of the global health crisis, the trade union leader recalled that the workers were living in a precarious situation and that a wage of 260 dinars could no longer provide for their needs. Mazen Maaitah announced that his organisation will demand that the increase in the minimum wage come into effect from the beginning of 2021.
For his part, the President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce stressed that the commercial sector is facing serious financial difficulties and that its interests are totally blocked. He gave the example of party halls, sports halls and restaurants whose owners will not be able to ensure the increase in question especially as they are still struggling with the expenses that have accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and the cessation of their activities. He added that the government's decision to increase the minimum wage must be postponed, saying that the sector can barely pay the 220 dinar wages because of the repercussions of the Covid-19.
