Bahrain: General Federation of Trade Unions Celebrates its Annual Day and National Women's Day

The General Federation of Trade Unions of Bahrain (GFTU) on Saturday celebrated its annual celebration on the occasion of the National Day of Bahraini Women. On this occasion, the trade union centre paid tribute to Zeineb Najem and the late Wided Masqati.

Inaugurating the ceremony, the organisation's Secretary General Abdelkader Chaibi greeted the Bahraini women and enumerated their past and present struggles. The trade union leader also pointed out that the unemployment rate among women was rising steadily and that women now account for two-thirds of the total number of unemployed in Bahrain, even though most of them are graduates. He stated that this is the greatest challenge that requires the intervention of all stakeholders in order to eradicate discrimination against women in both the public and private sectors.

Abdelkader Chaibi called in this context to enhance the social role of women by intensifying their participation in civil society organisations; a participation that reflects the strength of society which must, for its part, provide a safe environment for women through legislation that goes in this direction.

The General Secretary of the trade union centre referred to the challenges faced by women in the labour market and recalled that they do their utmost to enable their children to succeed in their studies and obtain the highest scientific qualifications. However, women are faced with a different reality that puts young female graduates out of work.

These conditions have led the General Federation of Trade Unions of Bahrain to develop a vision for developing the labour market and social funds to safeguard workers' rights.

It should be recalled that the Bahraini Trade Union Centre has called for the minimum wage to be set at 700 dinars in order to achieve full employment.
