Mauritania: CLTM denounces working conditions in Nouadhibou

On the fringes of a visit to Nouadhibou, the President of the Free Confederation of Workers of Mauritania (CLTM) denounced the working conditions in the city, saying he had noted a serious lack of protection and great pressure on workers who do not have a work contract.

The President of the CLTM said that working conditions in the economic capital are "disastrous" and called on the authorities to be more present to protect workers. He also referred to the "suffering" of the general agents of the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM) saying that their situation is "worse" than that of workers in other companies.

The trade union leader also revealed that the Chinese company Polly Hondong and the Turkish companies are engaged in "cruel" practices towards their workers, saying that neither the administration nor the labour inspectors can resolve the situation. He added that unfair dismissals are becoming commonplace in these companies where workers can no longer freely express their ideas, which, he said, requires urgent intervention by the state to enforce and respect the laws in force.
