Egypt: Health of EIPR Executive Director deteriorates a few days after his incarceration

Jasser Abdelrazzaq, an activist and executive director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), said that he had been able to see him before he left the country.Yesterday for the first time since his arrest on November 19, 2020.

The Defense Committee reported that Jasser Abdelrazzaq told them that he had been subjected to humiliating and inhuman treatment which affected his health and safety especially since he was not allowed to leave his cell where he had been put in a metal bed without a mattress and a very light coverage. The activist was stripped of all his belongings and money, was only entitled to light summer clothes, was not allowed access to the prison canteen and his skull was completely shaved.

Since the arrest, several international NGOs have launched a major solidarity campaign with Jasser Abdelrazzaq, who is accused of “membership in a terrorist organization” and “spreading false information”. Accusations that do not match the objectives of the EIPR, which claims to be a progressive and liberal organization.
