During a visit to Morocco last week, the Spanish Minister of the Interior called for the resumption of deportations of irregular migrants to their countries of origin. These transactions were suspended for months due to Covid-19.
Following a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart in Rabat, the Spanish Minister stated that Madrid intends to send back all irregular migrants who are not concerned by international protection, adding that it had discussed, at the same meeting, the fight against terrorism, organized crime and irregular migration, especially to the Canary Islands.
Note that the President of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands called for the refoulement of migrants on the basis of the principle of solidarity. Since the reinforcement of control on the Moroccan coasts, the Spanish archipelago has welcomed an unprecedented flow since the crisis of 2006.
