Tunisia: 80% of domestic workers do not benefit from health insurance

A study by the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) entitled “The impact of lifelong learning on domestic workers” revealed that 80% of domestic workers do not have health insurance.

Carried out between September and October 2020 on a sample of 100 paid (50) and unpaid domestic workers (50 housewives) residing in the Greater Tunis region, the study identified the reasons for the drop-out of these workers. 46% of respondents said they had left school by parental decision, 20% had dropped out of school for reasons related to poverty and the lack of a school near their place of residence, 16% left school by choice, 10% confirmed that they gave this right to their brothers and 8% because of school failure. In addition, 58% of domestic workers were pressured by their fathers or husbands to take up this activity and 42% exercised it by personal choice.
