Bahrain: a workshop on women’s rights

In collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, the General Federation of Trade Unions of Bahrain organized a workshop last Saturday on labour rights developments.

During his address, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Federation, Hassan Halwaji, highlighted the importance of civil society components as an important indicator of sustainable development, Stressing the need to unite the efforts of these components with those of the General Federation to bring women’s issues to the attention of the authorities. In this context, the official explained that his organization rejects all discrimination between men and women or between women and women and considered that the unification of efforts to achieve social justice has become an urgent need. Hassan Halwaji recalled that the Federation supports and contributes to the creation of the International Day against Violence against Women.

For her part, the Assistant Secretary-General for Women Workers' Affairs, Hiba Salim, made a presentation on international convention number 190 on violence and harassment in the world of work, adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) on its centenary. The adoption of this convention represented a significant change in the history of the ILO at a time when women, and especially women workers, were victims of gender-based violence around the world, recalls Hiba Salim, who took up the most important points of this convention, particularly those relating to the definition of violence, harassment, places and perpetrators of these practices covered by the Convention. The manager indicated that one of the most important features of this agreement is its approach that includes violence and harassment by or against third parties
