Mauritania: Authorities expel 210 migrants trying to join Europe

Security forces in the city of Nouadhibou, in the north of the country, deported 210 migrants arrested last Saturday while trying to reach Europe.

In a statement given to the Mauritanian news agency, a security official revealed that the deported migrants are of Senegalese and Malian nationality. The first group, made up of 108 migrants, was arrested on the open sea by the Mauritanian Coast Guard while the second group, 102 people, was intercepted by the police as it was preparing to leave Nouadhibou for Europe.

Smuggling of migrants in international waters near Mauritania has been a major movement in recent weeks. As part of the fight against irregular migration, Mauritania has arrested hundreds of migrants. At the beginning of the month, the police announced the death of the majority of the 80 migrants whose boat capsized while they were trying to cross the Mediterranean to go to Europe.
