Italy: Mafia exploits migrant workers in yacht construction

The Italian Finance Guard said on Tuesday that it had arrested eight individuals who had exploited foreign workers in the construction of yachts on the coast of Liguria in the northwest of the country.

In a statement, the Finance Guard revealed that dozens of migrant workers, mostly from Bangladesh, were hired to carry out tedious and potentially dangerous work (welding and painting yachts). Each worker received between 4 and 5 euros per hour and they were all obliged to work 14 hours a day without any benefit or social protection. These migrants were often humiliated, threatened and beaten.

The Finance Guard placed 7 of the arrested individuals in pre-trial detention while the 8th was under house arrest. Assets valued at around one million euros were also confiscated.
