During his discussions with a local human rights foundation regarding the strike of municipal agents in the city, the head of the public relations department of the Gaza City municipality explained that about 250 agents of a total of 1,400 employees held a sit-in, not a strike, because of payment irregularities. The official explained that these irregularities are caused by the financial crisis that the municipality of Gaza is going through, like other municipalities, since 2017.
The head of the Gaza City Public Relations Department said that this crisis has worsened since last March because of the pandemic, which led the municipality to pay a thousand shekels (295 dollars). to all employees regardless of the value of their wages in the hope that the disbursement rate of their salary will reach 50% at the beginning of this month of November. However, the municipality failed to meet its targets, which led the officers to demonstrate on November 8, 2020.
For its part, the local human rights foundation explained that these payment irregularities are contrary to Palestinian legislation, which clearly states that the worker is entitled to receive his full salary. The foundation has called on the government and the Palestinian Authority to provide financial assistance to municipalities so that they can continue to provide their services, which are becoming even more vital with the pandemic.
