Egypt: Workers of Nag Hammadi Aluminum Group protest

The Egyptian Trade Union Services Office reported that workers of the Nag Hammadi Aluminum Group began a sit-in the day before yesterday to oppose the implementation of the new unified human resources regulation for state-owned enterprises. It is a regulation which was generalised by the Ministry of Public Works and which has provoked lively debates among the ranks of workers.

The workers of the Nag Hammadi Aluminium Group had previously refused to receive the annual production premium, which was due to be paid at the beginning of the current month, to protest against the considerable reduction in the premium in question because of the entry into force of the new unified regulation of human resources initiated by the supervising ministry last month. The workers demanded to collect the entire annual production premium and rejected the new unified regulation which undermined their financial rights.

Intensive negotiations are currently underway between the Group’s Administrative Council, the Trade Union Committee and workers' representatives in order to contain the crisis and put an end to the sit-in of the workers to whom the administration has promised to reconsider the situation. However, the protesters refused this commitment and maintained their movement until the fulfillment of their request.
