Egypt: a workshop on the changing situation of trade unions

On Tuesday 10th of November, the Trade Union Services Office and the Committee for the Defence of Trade Union Freedoms organised a workshop on “The Evolution of the Trade Union Situation in the Light of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Skills Building Project” and the Ministry of Labour.

The workshop began with a presentation of the three stages of the project of dialogue between the parts of the work under the aegis of the government, the resumption of the ‘Better Work’ project and the monitoring of the application of the law on trade unions number 213 of the year 2017 and its amendments.

The representative of the Qalyubiya Drivers' Union Committee, Mohamed Nejib, said in this context that although he had expressed his good intentions, the Ministry of Labour had not made any effective progress on the trade unions' file. Mr. Nejib cited the example of his Trade Union Committee which is on hold despite having completely regularized its legal situation.

For his part, the lawyer Achraf Cherbeni reported the contents of the meeting of the trade union committees at the stop with the officials of the Ministry of Labour and stressed that several advances were made during this meeting where the legitimacy of these trade union committees was recognized. The two parties also agreed to hold weekly meetings to deal each week with a group of committees of those who finalized the procedures necessary for their activation. During the same meeting, the Cairo Committee of Property Tax Workers, one of the committees at the stop, managed to finalize the tabling of its documents.

The representatives of the trade unions present at the workshop agreed to monitor the project regularly by evaluating the

implementation of its various phases and by maintaining the dialogue with the trade union committees and the supervisory ministry until the reactivation of all the committees the cessation and facilitation of procedures for committees in the course of formation.
