Along with the general strike decreed by the Belarusian trade unions yesterday 26 October, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) called on all trade union organisations to support the workers and trade unions of Belarus who are being repressed and imprisoned by the current regime which is trying to prevent any form of peaceful protest.
The Secretary-General of the ITUC, Sharan Burrow, said that the right to strike is guaranteed by international law and the government is bound to respect this right, especially since Belarus has ratified ILO Conventions 87 and 98. We call on the government to stop these violations of fundamental rights and recognize that the people of Belarus have the right to make their own decisions without fear or interference from the authorities.”
Since last August, Belarus has been experiencing several popular protests that broke out after the incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, was accused of falsifying the results of the elections that kept him in office. President of Belarus since 1994, Aleksandr Lukashenko had succeeded in becoming the supreme judge following the chaos that followed the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
