The NGO Save the Children said last Wednesday that hundreds of irregular migrants have tried to reach Cyprus in order to flee Lebanon, which is going through an acute economic crisis.
The British NGO, which defends children’s rights around the world, revealed in a recent report that it recorded 21 maritime crossings of irregular migrants from Lebanon to Cyprus, compared to 17 intercepted crossings last year. According to the organization, 230 people aboard five boats were sent back to Lebanon last September.
Based on testimony from survivors, the report pointed out that these dangerous crossings cost the lives of several people, including children.
