Morocco: Corona pandemic has turned into a cover for the violation of trade union freedoms

In his speech at the scientific symposium organized on Friday 02 September 2020 in Rabat, on the topic of “Labor Code between legal text and actual implementation,” the Secretary-General of the Moroccan Workers’ Union, Meloudi El Moukharik, recorded that many of the requirements of the Labor Code have become frozen by the Covid-19 crisis, and that some employers found in the current situation an opportunity to continue violating trade union freedoms, closing businesses and production units, digesting rights and dismissing employees from work..

He considered that the government is aware of the whole situation which prompted the Moroccan Workers’ Union, to announce a national campaign of protest and condemnation from September 20 to October 20, 2020."

He added, “This is an opportunity for the government to assume its responsibility to protect all workers and defend their legitimate rights, on top of which is the right to maintain job positions, ensure their daily strength, and create adequate compensation for job losses for workers who were thrown into the street without compensation.”

And he stressed that all the conclusions and recommendations that will be issued on this school day will not be binding and no basis for any amendment to the Labor Code.
