Lebanon: Workers at waste sorting plant in Sidon continue strike

Workers at the Sanic waste sorting plant, south of the city of Sidon, observed a general strike last Thursday and Friday. The workers closed the factory gates and prevented the trucks from accessing the building. The strikers are calling for a wage increase in order to cope with rising prices and inflation in Lebanon.

The strike led to an accumulation of waste at the Ain al-Hilwe camp, where the authorities tasked UNRWA workers to collect and transport the waste to a location far from the camp’s homes.

For its part, the plant administration stated that “the problem began when we were informed of the banks’ decision to reduce the cash withdrawal limit (…) we immediately informed the municipality and efforts are being made to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
