United Arab Emirates: Authorities call on foreign workers to regularize their situation

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship in the UAE issued its final warning to residents and migrants operating in the country. In a statement, the Autorité recalled that the electronic system will begin, from the first hours of Monday, 12 October, to impose late fines on expired identity card holders who benefit from a deadline for the renewal of their cards.

On 12 July, the AMF granted residents a period of three months (during which no fine is recorded) to settle their status and renew their residence, if it expired after 1 March. Nationals of member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council have been granted the same deadline, which expires tomorrow, Monday, 12 October 2020.

The British BBC reported that tens of thousands of foreign workers are preparing to leave the United Arab Emirates after losing their jobs due to the Covid-19 crisis. The report revealed that several of these foreigners had spent several years in the kingdom and that, failing to obtain nationality or permanent residence, they are now obliged to return to their countries.
