Egypt: Cairo University of Administration workers on strike

The Trade Union Services Office reported that workers at the Cairo Institute of Administration have been on a labour strike for three days to protest the September wage freeze for more than 4,000 people working in the various subsidiaries of the University across the country.

Since last May, the University has struggled to maintain a regular payment of salaries. The administration paid half of the salaries in May, June, July and August and blocked the salaries in September.

The strikers also revealed that the administration has suspended all bonuses since 2016 and has not paid the exceptional annual bonus decided by the President of the Republic. In this context, the workers called on the University to apply the instructions of successive committees formed since 2015 to develop the institution.

In 2015, the Ministry of Higher Education had suspended the baccalaureate degree within the University, which only grants secondary education diplomas. The Ministry has put in place several conditions for the institution to be able to grant the baccalaureate again.
