Morocco: Democratic Confederation of Labour warns against violations of social rights

Khalid Houir Alami, Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Confederation of Labour , said during a speech on the occasion of the Labour Code Study Day– organized by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Integration in the presence of the Head of Government Saad Dine El Othmani– “The labour relations situation in our country shows that we live in chronic fragility and that any additional flexibility will aggravate the social conditions of the poorest and perpetuate vulnerability and injustice. We must remember that responsibility comes from a commitment to respect social laws, whether it be the Labour Code or the laws governing social protection.”

The union official explained that the majority of protests and strikes result from the non-application of the content of the Labour Code and stressed that the pandemic and its repercussions on the labour market– after more than 600,000 people lost their jobs– has worsened the situation, especially since the government has authorized the dismissal of one in five workers.

The Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Confederation of Labour recalled that the political regime must strike a balance between the economic and social systems. In this context, he affirmed that “if we were to opt for one of the two, priority should be given to the social question and to the construction of the social state in order to face the growing socio-economic inequalities”.

Khalid Houir Alami also warned the government against any attempt to “exploit this day of study to violate the Labour Code”.

The official recalled that the study day should not replace tripartite negotiations and should be limited to its scientific fields.
