WHO warns of danger of giving up control of pandemic

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned of the danger of giving up control of the pandemic as the number of new cases increases worldwide.

During a press conference on Monday in Geneva, Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained that many countries in the northern hemisphere are experiencing a worrying increase in the number of cases and hospitalizations. In addition, intensive care units are reaching their capacity in some places, particularly in Europe and North America.”

The Director-General of the WHO acknowledged that, after months of fighting the pandemic, some fatigue was developed due to telework, distance education, the cancellation of all parties and gatherings and the cancellation of all funerals.

However, Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that “we must not give up, we must do everything to protect health workers,” adding that political leaders must strike a balance to preserve jobs while fighting the virus. In this context, the WHO leader called on leaders to stop politicizing Covid-19 saying that “When political differences divide a country, when there is a flagrant disregard for scientists and health care professionals, confusion reigns and the number of cases and deaths soars. That’s why I’ve said it many times: stop politicizing Covid-19.”
