United Arab Emirates: Court Orders Company to Pay 9,000 Dirham to Worker

A trial court in Abu Dhabi ordered a company to pay 9,000 dirhams in compensation to a worker. This represents the equivalent of one week’s work and a fine for residence. The court dismissed the claim for unfair dismissal and airfare compensation as the complainant was recruited while already in the United Arab Emirates and was dismissed during her probationary period.

The complainant indicated that while in the UAE, she received an offer of employment to which she responded by sending all requested documents. A month later, the employer asked him to begin work immediately by issuing him a visa without giving him time to complete the necessary procedures. Once in office, she was terminated after a week.

The worker claimed 7,500 dirhams, the value of the residency fines, 1,866 dirhams, the equivalent of a work week, 24,000 dirhams for wrongful dismissal and 3,000 dirhams for the airfare.
