Morocco: Tetouan garbage collectors on strike

The garbage collectors of the city of Tetouan, affiliated to the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT) and working on behalf of the two companies that manage the cleanliness of the city, began a labour strike and organized a protest rally in front of the city hall to protest against the late payment of wages in September.

In a statement given to the online newspaper Hespress, the regional secretary of the UMT said that the protest rally organized last Tuesday by the garbage collectors is part of the movements that denounce the wage irregularities that have become a habit for more than a year while a convention, signed between the administrations of the two companies and the union party, clearly stipulates that wages must be paid on the 28th of each month.

The union official added that the wage delay is unacceptable, especially since both companies have sufficient capital to advance the wages of their workers while waiting to settle their affairs with the local community of Tetouan.
